Zach Miller is one of the few bright spots on a team that can't seem to get itself over Al Davis' fat freakin' hump. For all the things that the Raiders have done wrong in the past, drafting Miller in the 2nd round back in 2007 wasn't one of them. Zach was supposed to go in the 1st round that year, but he had a terrible Combine and slipped. When he was still sitting there in the 2nd round, Oakland pounced and landed one of the more versatile TEs to come out of the draft in the last few years.
He's got great hands, catching 56 balls (led the Raiders in '08) on just 86 targets last year, and his blocking skills are one of the big reasons the Raiders ground game has been in the top-10 the past two years ( they ranked 26th in 2006 before he was drafted).
His 2008 numbers were solid at 778 yards, with only one TD (11th in a basic scoring format), but the aforementioned targets are most encouraging. JaMarcus Russell is still learning how to complete passes to his WRs, and until that syllabus is mastered, Miller stands to benefit most. He is a big target for Russell at 6'5", 255 lbs, and with rookie Brandon Myers being tabbed as more of a blocking TE for the Raiders this season, Miller should receive more opportunities to move in motion to the slot in two-TE sets, giving LBs and safeties headaches. He doesn't have great speed clocking a 4.74 40-yard dash at his alma mater's "Pro Day", but can still do damage over the middle.
Miller's numbers have increased over his first two years in the league. We don't see his yardage totals increasing much, but his TD count has only one way to go. PPR leagues should bounce Miller up a bit, as should yardage-only leagues. There are a couple of other TEs that we are taking a gamble on this season over him (Vernon Davis and Visanthe Shiancoe and his third leg), but we like Miller as a fringe starter in '09. Make him the 13th TE off of draft boards this summer.
Miller hasn’t missed a game in his two-year career.
