There have been many accurate self-proclamations in history. Muhammad Ali said "I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee." That was true. David Ortiz once told reporters, after hitting one home-run in the 1st month of the baseball season, "Just write, Papi stinks." That was true. Willis McGahee once called himself the "greatest back in the NFL." That was as true as the infamous Dewey defeats Truman headlines.
McGahee has skills, but what holds him back is his garbage attitude. He's been in the NFL for five years and rushed over 1,100 yards in three of those seasons. Except for his rookie season, when he went for 13 touchdowns, he's averaged about six TDs per season. He's the number one back for the Ravens and will be this season. He's coming off the worst season in his career, in which he only rushed for 671 yards (he was injured at the beginning of the year) so he'll be out to prove that he's the "greatest back in the NFL.
His doctors can probably more easily identify a picture of his left knee before they could his mug-shot. McGahee was the star RB for the Hurricanes in 2003 whose knee got absolutely crunched in the FIESTA Bowl (National Championship) game vs. Ohio State. He tore about everything in a knee that you can tear ( PCL, MCL, ACL).
Do you think any of his friends were cruel enough to play this song for him after that game?
Despite the shredding of his knee in the Fiesta (forever) Bowl, he managed to rehab himself to be the 23rd overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft (but did not play until the '04 season). It's remarkable that McGahee has been able to accomplish what he has given that hit, but one would think that his attitude wouldn't be so sour given his second chance at a career.
Even though McGahee hasn't played a full 16 games since 2005, he's played in at least 13 games every season. He rushed for seven TDs last season even though he got a career low 170 carries. McGahee once again underwent off-season knee and ankle surgery and did not participate much in OTAs. The Ravens coaches make no bones about the fact that they are truly a RBBC, and Ray Rice is the early favorite to get the "lead" RB load for the Ravens backfield. This relegates McGahee to handcuff duties. We have Rice as a top 25 RB and McGahee coming right after that. Make McGahee Rice's handcuff this season.
Willis tore up his knee in college, and had yet another surgery on it that caused him to miss the beginning of last season. He’s also had rib, ankle, and stomach issues in the past, and hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2005.
