Punch Out

Matt Schaub needs only one more injury plagued season to cement the nickname  “Glass Joe”:

80’s video games were tight.  He has been in the league for five seasons, and a starter for two of those; he missed 10 games during that stretch.   That is enough to scare many fantasy ‘ballers away on draft day.  It also opens the door for potential ROI on draft day.

Schaub backed up Michael Vick for the first three years of his career on the Falcons.  If you remove his rookie season numbers, his TD % (TDs per attempts) on Atlanta was 5.4%.  Peyton Manning finished ’08 second overall in TD% with 4.9% for perspective.   Schaub flashed a penchant for getting the ball into the end zone as a sub in Atlanta,  and this surely factored into Houston’s decision to making a play for him in 2007 (they gave up two 2nd round picks).

Start Your Engines

As most QBs do, Schaub struggled a bit in his first year as head signal caller for the Texans.   Besides missing five games, he threw an interception (9) for each touchdown (9) and managed a pedestrian 203 yards per game.    He improved dramatically in his 2nd season despite an Offensive Coordinator change.  He was sidelined for five more games, but if you were to spread his key fantasy stats over 16 games in ‘08 you are looking at roughly 4,400 yards and 22 TDs and 14.5 picks good for top nine in the league.  His TD% was 3.9% (8th overall for QBs with at least 280 attempts).

2009 Fantasy Outlook

If Schaub can string together one 16 game season, he can not only avoid being called Glass Joe on this site for the rest of his career, but will also find himself among the top eight fantasy signal callers.  Big if, though.  He has demonstrated a knack for getting the ball in the end zone since entering the league.  He is commandeering an offense that ranked 7th in pass attempts, 5th in completions, 4th in yards, and tied for 13th in TDs.   Repetition and experience are key at the QB position, and Schaub now has two years under the hood in the same system, and no major changes are on the horizon.

The offensive line remains a key factor in Schaub’s # of visits to the ER.   They allowed 32 sacks as a unit in ’08 (16th overall); a significant uptick from ’07 (22 sacks).  Houston is returning all five of their o-line starters and two of them are in contract years (RG Mike Brisiel and LG Chester Pitts)    Rookie phenom Steve Slaton starts his 2nd year after rolling for 1282 rush yards, 377 receiving yards, and 10 total TDs.  He is also helped along by having one of the most dominant WRs in the game in Andre Johnson.  And while defenses will continue to double up on ‘Dre,  Kevin Walter has proven to be a very capable WR2 option catching eight TDs and 899 yards this past season.

When you draft Schaub, you do so understanding that QB then becomes the first position (after RB) that you need to backup.  Schaub has the potential for returning higher returns relative to where you can draft him.

Injury Alert

Yellow

His first injury-free season in 2009 earns this Glass Joe an FFA Yellow Flag!!! If you plan to go early on Schaub, you should make QB among the first positions you back up in the draft.
