Mario Manningham signed a four-year, $2.322 million rookie contract in July 2008. The deal included a $617,000 signing bonus and escalators are available in the final year. Here’s how his deal shakes out:
2009 – $385,000
2010 – $470,000
2011 – $555,000
2012 – Free Agent
Until Manningham makes a name for himself in the pros, he will be known for one play his freshman year. With one second left against a Penn State team that was cruising to the national title, QB Chad Henne dropped back, and the rest is history.
But Manningham will forever be linked with the underachieving Michigan teams in the middle of the decade. With Henne running the show, Hart at RB and Manningham making big play after big play, Michigan could only go so far as the Rose Bowl. Too bad the Giants won the Super Bowl the year before he got there.
Manningham , like all rookies, had to take the Wonderlic Test. A bunch has been made about giraffes scoring higher than some players, but Manningham seemed to have avoided this comparison. Well, thanks to Pyromaniac, Manningham will forever be linked giraffes and other less intelligent creatures (sperm whale?) because he scored a whopping 6 out of 50 on this test.
Here’s a sample question: What is the ninth month of the year?
If you think it’s June, you might want to use your phone a friend and consult the nearest kindergartner. How someone scores a 6 on this test is beyond comprehension. But don’t take our word for it, try it for yourself. Here’s a sample test. You have 2 minutes to answer 9 questions. If you only get 2 right, that’s still better than Manningham (although let’s just say it’s a good thing the computer scores your fantasy football every week for you).
Manningham has developed into a solid receiver for the Giants this year. He played in only 7 games last year and totaled 4 catches for 26 yards, but with Plaxico Burress gone, Manningham has gotten the opportunity to start and hasn’t disappointed. He isn’t quite a WR1 or WR2 option, but he’s a valuable WR3 as he is one of Manning’s favorite end zone targets. Manningham will usually be a guy who averages 5 catches for 60 yards and a score- not great numbers but solid. And with a stacked backfield, the passing game will be open for the Giants. Manningham shouldn’t be a free agent in any leagues, and if he is in yours, you should grab him.
Mario had arthroscopic knee surgery back in 2006 while playing for Michigan, but other than that, he's good to go.
