There's no two ways about this one so we're just gonna say it; Leonard Pope is terrible. Last year, he caught nine passes for 77 yards and no touchdowns on a team that was 2nd or 3rd in pretty much every passing stat in the NFL. He wasn't even the leading tight-end on the Cardinals last year. Ben Patrick (who?) caught 11 passes for 104 yards.
Pope did have a good year in 2007, catching 23 passes for 238 yards and five touchdowns, so many people thought he would go off last year. Unfortunately for him, part of the problem is Kurt Warner. Warner enjoys throwing to his TEs as much as Paul, Ringo, and George enjoyed Yoko Ono. In Warner's 11-year career, Jeremy Shockey is the only tight-end to go for more than 431 yards in a season. In fact, last year Pope was the 10th most targeted person on the team behind five wide receivers (including the great-named Early Doucet), three running backs, and Patrick.
Pope has as much fantasy value as the real Pope in 2009. He is an awful blocker, so he's not gonna increase his playing time that way. The Cards also signed free agent TE Anthony Becht (a pretty respectable blocker) in the offseason to help with their awful running attack, and 2nd-year player Stephen Spach could be the best all-around tight-end on the team if he recovers from the ACL surgery he had in the offseason. Pope is not even a lock to make the team with all the tight-ends in the mix. That, coupled with the abundance of talent at wide receiver, makes Pope of no value fantasy-wise. Don't even bother having him on your board.
Pope has been nicked up in the past with ankle and knee issues. His tall frame puts added pressure on his joints and he can only take so much pounding.
