He is among our least favorite players in the league. Not enough to forego his character sketch in favor of a steaming turd, but he's getting there. Larry Johnson has been arrested four times since 2003 on various assault charges against women. Believe us, had he been convicted of any of these charges, he'd already be a pile of dung.
It's not just his treatment of women that has us disgusted with him. The odd timeliness of his contract signing (August 2007) and his ensuing apathy toward his job strike us as too much coincidence. We don't care that he missed some camp in 2007 as he held out, but the fact that he was out-paced by a rookie named Kolby Smith in YPC and TDs per carry during the time that he played does matter. He then managed to get suspended for four games in 2008 for more women assault charges.
Larry's career goals can be best outlined in the following vid:
He's working on the married part first. He'll get there, though. Plus, Rihanna has been out cozying up to guys not named Chris Brown this summer; destiny is a weird thing.
LJ has a bad attitude. It was well-documented as he entered the league, but he behaved (and performed) well enough to earn himself some major F-you money before the 2007 season started (see below). This contract was the largest the Chiefs had ever signed with one player at the time. Since then, Larry has returned the Chiefs overly generous gesture with nothing but ill-preparation, injury, a couple of assault charges, and general aloofness.
Champion? Team player?
Per the original deal, the first three years of the contract were guaranteed as part of the "$19 million", but the Chiefs included a behavior clause such that they are no longer on the hook to pay LJ if he acts... like LJ. A few LJ assault charges later, and the Chiefs are looking wise. LJ appealed, lost, and now is at "voluntary" workouts all summer on his best behavior and actually giving Haley a reason to play him. The power of the greenback is certainly is compelling.
2009 Fantasy Outlook
LJ could struggle this season in an offense that does not care much about running the ball.
Todd Haley's offenses in Arizona finished as follows:
Haley never had a RB of LJ's caliber (or lack of character) to work with, so if LJ is able to see the bulk of 400-440 team rush attempts, he could be in good shape. There are other factors working against him, though. First, the obvious: A new head coach, new scheme, and a new QB. Defenses should be able to capitalize on this team's early confusion. Beyond that, the Chiefs porous defense made it so that rushing attempts were scarce for a different reason other than the designed scheme. GM Scott Pioli dedicated the 2009 NFL draft to fixing the defensive issues by spending 1st (DE Tyson Jackson-LSU), 3rd (DT Alex Magree-Purdue), and 4th (CB Donald Washington-Ohio State) rounders on defense, and then signed the interminable LB Zach Thomas to a contract as well. KC's defense was ranked 31st in 2008, but ranked 13th in 2007. The changes in personnel along with the coaching changes should go a long way to returning the Chiefs defense closer to their 2007 performance.
Only Jamaal Charles on the RB depth chart threatens to take carries away from LJ (3rd downs and change of pace), so assuming he can avoid pushing, spitting, or waiving a gun in a woman's face this summer, he should be in uniform handling the bulk of the carries.
Though LJ missed 4 games last year, none were due to injury and he looks to be as healthy as ever coming into the 2009 season.
