Kyle Orton's got nothing on Abe Lincoln:

He holds a 21-12 record as a starter in the NFL, but we're guessing (and being overly generous) a 12-21 record as a starter in fantasy football. He threw 18 touchdowns on 12 interceptions in '08 playing catch with one of the weaker WR tandems in the NFL (Devin Hester and Rashied Davies), but gets a significant upgrade in Denver with Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. As long as he is throwing the ball 10 yards or less, Denver has nothing to worry about. But when that ball sails into that 11th yard, the problems ensue. Orton completed a whopping 35% of his passes over 11 yards (143 attempts). For perspective, Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte completed 42% and 43% of their attempts over 11 yards. No one has ever asked why Orton is not as effective as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Drew Brees, but when you can't even compare him to Vikings' QB punch lines, you've got some problems.
The good news is that McDaniels employs a system that is based on the short and intermediate routes. If he can just cut out the intermediate routes, the Broncos should be just fine.
Assuming Brandon Marshall does not get traded, Orton should fare better than he ever did in Chicago. Marshall is an imposing target and could actually help Orton's completion percentages (assuming he gets his drops under control). Eddie Royal is squirrelly and will play the Wes Welker role in McDaniels' scheme which is heavy on the 10 yard and under pass play. Marshall and Royal combined to catch 71% of former QB Jay Cutler's passes for 10 yards or under, so all hope is not lost. However, Orton and his noodle-arm are no real threat downfield, so we have to assume defenses are going to game-plan to limit this damage.
Another challenge for Orton is playing out of the shotgun which McDaniel covets. He completed only 52% of his passes out of the shotgun last year with three touchdowns and six interceptions. 2009 is looking like it's going to have a pretty steep learning curve and we are shying away from everyone on this team except Knowshown Moreno. Orton is barely even a backup QB according to our rankings. Make this booze-hound the 15th QB off of draft boards this summer.

Kyle had a high ankle sprain in the middle of last season and was supposed to miss a month, but came back early and only missed one game. However, after that injury, he threw eight TDs and eight INTs while throwing 10 TDs and four INTs before the injury.
