Injury Report Data

These link to the industry's best IRs. These are the sites that Stegman goes to, in order, if/when he's obsessing about data on the status of an injury.

2009 Archive (published August 2009)

Rag Doll

The past few seasons, Smith has been thrown all over the place like a rag doll for the Chiefs.  He was a backup, then he was a starter, then he was a backup again, then he got injured, and now he's 3rd string.  Basically, it's hard to predict when and where he'll show up.  When he filled in for Larry Johnson in 2008 for eight games, he averaged 14 carries per game, including a game when he ran for 151 yards and two TDs on 31 carries.  However, last season was cut short when he suffered a torn patella tendon in week nine last year that put him on IR.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

If you're looking for a sleeper in the draft, we're not confident that Kolby Smith is your guy.  Jamaal Charles fits Haley's system much better and had a strong rookie campaign in 2008.  He represents the best option as a change of pace/3rd down RB to complement Larry Johnson and his primary backup should he go down.  LJ will stay with the team and thus be the featured guy on first and second downs and all short yardage situations.  He has dealt with a number of injury issues over the past two years, and if he goes down again, Smith could see time given that Jamaal Charles may not be able to handle a full load.  You would have to be allowed a bunch of extra roster spots to be blowing late round fliers on this guy.  He's really just a waiver guy.

Injury Alert

Yellow

Smith missed the final seven games of the ’08 season with a torn patella tendon and it wasn’t fully healed in the offseason as he missed most of minicamp.
