Ostrich Fast
He hasn’t actually raced one, but we’re taking Jamaal over an ostrich if they ever line up for a 40-yard dash:

While at Texas, he was a 4-time All-American in track (60m indoors, 100m outdoors, 200m outdoors and 4x100m relay outdoors) and ran a blistering 4.38 40-yd at the Combine. He’s got blazing speed, which the Chiefs used to compliment Larry Johnson and Kolby Smith last year during Charles’ rookie campaign.
Charles was only given 67 carries, but managed an impressive 5.3 YPC. Where he established himself, though, is as a pass catcher out of the backfield. In limited duty, he caught 27 balls for 272 yards.
2009 Fantasy Outlook
There’s no doubt about it, LJ is the main man in Kansas City running the ball in-between the tackles. However, he’s thumbed his nose up at this franchise (and the law and most women that he’s encountered) since inking his bloated contract back in 2007 and remains on a very short leash. What’s more, he is not Haley’s prototype RB for his system. We see Jamaal Charles role increasing significantly this season. The Chiefs like the way Charles has progressed and have said they will use him in 3rd down situations. Charles isn’t the best runner between the tackles, so his full-time value is still in question.
He is a threat to score anywhere on the field, so if given the chance, he will return value to anyone who handcuffs him to LJ. And if LJ-owners haven’t taken this speed demon by about the 14th-17th rounds, then grab him for the upside and stash him on your bench. Charles is the primary backup to LJ and will see 100+ touches with a healthy LJ and full time duty in the event of an injury. We have Jamaal ranked just outside our top 40 RBs.
Green means go.
