The Browns opened their rookie minicamp with quarterback Brandon Weeden taking snaps under center -- a big deal for him considering he played in the shotgun often as a senior in college. Throwing to fellow rookies and some second-year players, Weeden showed off a strong arm albeit with some inaccuracy. While Weeden prides himself on his accuracy and will fix what he messed up on, it was evident that his arm is much stronger than Colt McCoy's. "When I got to the college level I really took a lot of pride in it -- accuracy," he said. "I think today I threw the ball fairly accurate, not as good as I can, but it will get better. I have been blessed to be able to throw the football. Even when I played baseball, I through the football every single year, it's been in my blood."

Just because the Browns spent a first-round pick on Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden doesn't mean he's going to be the starter in Week 1. That's according to Mike Holmgren, who says Weeden will have to beat out Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the job in camp this summer. "We drafted a young quarterback that we think can come in and play right away, but we're not just going to hand him the football," Holmgren told 92.3 The Fan. "I still love Colt McCoy [but] we had a chance to get a mature quarterback who has a chance to come in and contribute right away. Whether that happens or not we have to let it play out. We have to let them compete. We have to let them play and see what happens. The fact that we drafted him so high means that we like him, but we also like Colt McCoy and we like Seneca as well."

Colt McCoy returned to work with the Browns not knowing how much longer he'll have a job. McCoy participated as expected in the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program on Monday just days after Cleveland drafted his likely successor, Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden. McCoy could be kept as his backup and Browns President Mike Holmgren said over the weekend he could imagine McCoy staying on as the team's No. 2 QB. "That could be a difficult situation except if it is ever going to work, it will work if that happens, because Colt McCoy is a special young man," said Holmgren, who picked McCoy in the third round in 2010. "Of course he wants to play, they all want to play. Again, nothing has been done yet, we don't know how it is going to sort itself out. ... It is never easy, everyone wants to play. But, you only have one ball and only one guy can play at a time."

Browns GM admits that he'll consider trading young QB
The Colt McCoy era could be over by the end of the weekend. Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert admitted Thursday night that the team will consider trading McCoy after selecting quarterback Brandon Weeden with the No. 22 pick in the draft. "It's something we'll talk about tonight and tomorrow," Heckert said. (NFL.com)
FF Today's Take: At 28, Weeden is a bit of an anomaly and will begin his career at an age when many football players are already contemplating retirement. McCoy is a definite casualty of this selection, but it might not take him too long to find a new home. He was moderately productive on a Browns team that had one of the least dynamic receiving units in the NFL over the past two years.

Multiple reports out of Cleveland report that the Browns could look to trade quarterback Colt McCoy after the team drafted Brandon Weeden in the first round Thursday night. General Manager Tom Heckert acknowledged that Weeden was drafted to be the starting quarterback. He said the team would discuss whether or not to trade McCoy before the draft is over. "Eventually [Weeden's] going to be a starter for us," said Heckert. "That's what we drafted him for." Added coach Pat Shurmur: "We think he's going to project into being an outstanding NFL quarterback and we were able to see that in the way he competed in college. We felt he was going to make us and the position better."
