Chaz signed a four-year, $1.755 million rookie contract in July 2008 that included a $50,000 signing bonus. 2009: The remainder of the deal plays out as follows:
2009: $385,000
2010: $470,000
2011: $555,000
2012: Free Agent
Late in the 2008 NFL Draft, long after Mort, Goodell, and anyone who had a life finished watching, the Raiders took a chance on a freak WR out of San Diego State. He was 6'4", ran a 4.3 40 and has a 43-inch vertical. But as with Oliver Twist, nobody paid much attention to him... except Al Davis. Al sniffed out some potential in the final round, and made his move. Chaz had an atypical season for a 7th rounder, in that he actually caught a few passes (15) and TDs (two), but didn't see enough targets or reps to make a fantasy impact. The Raiders ranked 31st in the passing last year, and 32nd the year before. The leading Oakland WR in '08, Johnnie Lee Higgens, caught only 22 passes last year. Chad Johnson does that in between tweets.
After having a so-so rookie year, Schilens has impressed everyone at minicamps and OTAs. Contra Costa Times Raiders beat writer Jerry McDonald said that Schilens is the Raiders best WR. Considering Javon Walker is terminally injured these days, rookie Heywood-Bey missed most of minicamps and OTAs with a hamstring injury, and Higgens has looked just average this offseason, it's very possible Schilens could land himself in the starting lineup week one. He's fast, tall, and he's got great hands. Now if JaMarcus Russell could figure out how to complete more than 22 passes in a season to a WR, he'd be in really good shape. Also, keep an eye on the pre-season and training camp, should, for any reason, Jeff Garcia beat Russell out for that starting job, take a look at what Antonio Bryant did last year with Garcia, and then bump Schilens up a bunch on your cheat sheets.
