Lions WR delighted to grace video game cover
Fresh off a mega contract, Calvin "Megatron" Johnson has landed the coveted cover of "Madden NFL 13." The Detroit Lions wideout beat out second-year Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for the honor. Although hugely popular, the video game carries the stigma of a "Madden Curse." Running back Peyton Hillis, then a member of the Cleveland Browns, won the fan vote last year, but was plagued by injuries and controversy in a hectic 2011 season. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: Will Megatron shine or follow in the footsteps of such cover stars like Hillis, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb and Shaun Alexander? We think the the former. Johnson has missed just three games over five NFL seasons and has been a model of consistency, producing even when star quarterback Matt Stafford has been injured.

Panthers QB appears "more mature" according to coach
After quarterback Cam Newton had what I consider to be the best rookie season by any NFL player at any position, you might think the Carolina Panthers wouldn't want him to change one bit. In fact, however, they are excited that he seems a little different. "I had a chance to visit with him briefly and he seems like a different person," Rivera said Thursday. "He seems more mature, in terms of ready to take some leadership roles." (Charlotte Observer)
FF Today's Take: Newton was an absolute stud last season as a rookie and there is every reason to expect more of the same from him as an NFL sophomore. While he is unlikely to repeat the 14 rushing touchdowns he scored as a rookie, he is quite capable of posting big numbers through the air. He'll be a mid-first rounder in most formats next season.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton says he has made great strides as a starting quarterback and has big expectations entering his second season. "With reviewing all the games from last year, I feel that the improvement is through the roof for me," Newton said. "I've had the whole offseason to work on the things that I feel like I need to get better at (and that) will come into fruition. With the upcoming OTAs, I feel like that's another time for me to get better." Huddle Up: When you consider what Newton accomplished as a rookie without benefit of a full compliment of OTAs, that he's digging in this offseason and looking to improve on that performance is downright scary.

Panthers QB Cam Newton was award the 2011 Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award on Saturday. Newton set an NFL record for touchdowns rushing in a season by a quarterback with 14 and became the first player in league history to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 500. He helped Carolina improve from 2-14 to 6-10, throwing for 21 touchdowns. Newton is the second straight No. 1 overall draft pick to take the honor in voting by a nationwide panel of 50 media who regularly cover the league. Rams QB Sam Bradford won it last year.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was named The Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year Saturday, Feb. 4. Newton received 47 of the possible 50 votes, with Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton receiving the other three. "First, I've got to give all the honor and glory to the man above," Newton said. "I want to also thank my coaching staff, my family, my teammates and (team owner Jerry Richardson) for giving me the opportunity. And my fans - without them, I would not be here." Huddle Up: While Dalton had a solid first season, that Newton was not a unanimous choice is a crime. He shattered records, carried the Panthers, and more than lived up to the hype of being the first overall pick.

Panthers QB Cam Newton threw for 4,051 yards and scored 35 touchdowns - 21 passing, 14 rushing - and is a strong contender for the AP's Offensive Rookie of the Year award despite 17 interceptions. On several occasions he made incredible plays, including on a 49-yard touchdown run against Tampa Bay in which he juked out a linebacker and outraced defenders to the end zone. "It's still a learning process for me," Newton said. "I mean I learned so much the entire season. I can do so many things better. I have so much respect for this league that a lot of people don't understand what it takes to be a player in the National Football League, let alone the quarterback."

Amazing. There's nothing else to say.
