2009 Archive (Published August 2009)

Irrelevant Opportunity

Last year, the rookie Cottam sat behind one of the most prolific TEs ever to play the game, Tony Gonzalez.  Cottam only caught 7 passes for 63 yards last year, but he rarely saw the field as Gonzalez dominated.  He was brought in as more of a blocking TE, but is evolving into a receiving role.  He got a little more playing time once the Chiefs moved to a spread offense, as they played more two-TE sets with Cottam alongside Gonzalez.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

With Gonzalez gone to the Falcons, Cottam has the starting role locked.  But before you get all loopy with that tidbit, please understand that head coach Todd Haley doesn't utilize the TE much and it was a major factor in the Chiefs moving Gonzo to the Falcons.  Haley's TEs have 62 catches for 594 yards combined over two seasons - both marks are last in the NFL.  Cottam's 6'7" frame will make him a good target for Cassel in the end-zone, but his forte is still blocking, and that is what he will find himself doing on most snaps.  Leave him on the waiver wire.  We have him ranked as the 26th TE this season.

Injury Alert

Yellow

Cottam has had five major surgeries in his life, including one on his wrist in 2007 (his most recent one) and one for injuries he sustained in a car accident. He hasn’t played a full season, not even close to one, so it’s tough to tell how he’s going to hold up against NFL linemen week-in and week-out.
