The Colts are really puffing the magic dragon on Collie. "If you think Brandon Stokley, let's hope he turns out to be as good," said Colts President Bill Polian.
But in that case, Collie is tripping on the Colts. In an interview during rookie camp, Collie said this:
"It's perfect. It couldn't be better. I couldn't have picked it any better. This is a great organization and a good transition from BYU to here. They run things in a very similar fashion. The coaching staff is phenomenal. You have guys who have great character and who work hard and who are technicians... It's probably the best spot. I couldn't be happier. I wanted the best fit for my style of play and for what they want out of their players, I think that's what I got."
Ehhhh, ok
Collie is actually a great receiver who could be just what the Colts are looking for. Collie spent two years in Argentina on a mission, but returned in time for the 2007 season at BYU. He started off slow, but went for 100+ yards in five of his last six games. In 2008, he played better in rattling off 11 100-yard games and catching 106 balls (3rd in the nation) for 1,538 yards (1st), yet he slipped to the 4th round. Many people thought the Colts would take Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt in the first round after Marvin Harrison's departure, but the Colts really liked what they saw in Collie. He doesn't have great speed, but he has great hands, is a smart route runner, and is tall. He will step in and produce immediately with Manning under center.
Collie is battling for the 3rd spot now with four other WRs, but he should emerge as the guy. The Colts have likened him to a taller version of Brandon Stokley. Stokley had a 1,000-yard, 10-TD season in 2004 and they think that Collie, given a few years, can match and even exceed it. Collie is 24 years old and mature enough to handle the spotlight. He is taller than WR2 Anthony Gonzalez, and if A-Gon does not seize on the opportunity that Marvin Harrison's retirement provided him, Collie will be waiting. Buzzed and desperate and disinterested in the very last round of the draft, we would have no problem blowing a late pick on this cat.
No injuries to the newbie. Move along.
